25 April 20268 min readBy Mark Bielz
Regular maintenance is the cheapest way to keep your car running longer and avoid expensive breakdowns. Here's what to check and when.
Every 5,000 – 10,000 km (or 6 months)
- Engine oil and filter — the single most important maintenance item
- Tyre pressure — check monthly, adjust for load and season
- Windscreen washer fluid — top up
- Lights — walk around and check all lights work
Every 20,000 – 40,000 km (or 12 months)
- Air filter — replace if dirty (more often on dirt roads)
- Cabin filter — keeps your AC clean
- Brake inspection — pads, rotors, fluid level
- Battery test — especially before summer and winter
- Coolant level — top up or flush if due
- Tyre rotation — even out wear
Every 40,000 – 60,000 km (or 2 years)
- Spark plugs — replace (check your manual for interval)
- Transmission fluid — check level, replace if manual
- Brake fluid — flush and replace
- Drive belts — inspect for cracks and wear
Every 100,000 km
- Timing belt/chain — critical on interference engines
- Water pump — often done with timing belt
- Suspension check — shocks, struts, bushings
